Season Announcement Recap!

Header Final-01

By: Clayton Dusendang

It has been a busy and exciting week for us at Miller Auditorium! On Wednesday night our Broadway season announcement event took place. Even though we experienced the thick of Michigan winters here in Kalamazoo, we still had a wonderful turnout!

The night started off with check-in the lobby. After check-in, everyone was seated in the house and we began our presentation with some kind words from our Marketing Director, Tracey Lawie. We then began a video compilation of our upcoming 2016-17 PNC Broadway In West Michigan Series! They are as follows…

  • Dirty Dancing: Oct. 1 & 2, 2016
  • The Book of Mormon: Oct. 18-23, 2016
  • RENT: 20th Anniversary Tour: Nov. 11-13, 2016
  • Roger + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA: March 24-26, 2017
  • Motown The Musical: May 9-14, 2017

We were also fortunate to bring Moeisha McGill and Curtis Wiley Jr.  from “Motown the Musical” to perform some hits from the show! Guests even stood up and started dancing in their seats during their stellar performance. I got the chance to talk to both Curtis and Moeisha after the show and asked them what their favorite thing about Motown was. They both agreed heartily that the catalog of music is their favorite thing about the musical.

Bonus! Drum-roll please…

We were also extremely excited to share with our guests that Disney’s THE LION KING is scheduled to come to Miller for our 50th Anniversary 2017-18 Broadway season!

Following our presentation, we invited guests up for appetizers on the stage. Our staff then spent time visiting with guests, discussing the upcoming shows and answering any questions they had about the upcoming season.

It was yet another magical night to be spent at Miller! It was pleasant to be able to interact with those who love coming to our shows and talk about our favorite thing here at Miller, performance! We can’t wait to bring more announcements for other shows to be hitting the Miller stage next season. Until then, have a good one!

Motown Comes To Kalamazoo!

By: Clayton Dusendang

Wow! This season has really been picking up here at Miller. Show after show keeps the job very exciting behind the scenes. With that in mind, we are very stoked to bring a genre of music that is held very dear to the state of Michigan. The musical genre of Motown has its roots firmly planted in the great city of Detroit, Michigan.

On Saturday, March 19 at 8 p.m., Dancing in the Streets Motown Revue will be coming to Miller Auditorium to bring you the energy and electricity of the motor city.  Expect your favorite songs made famous by The Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and many more.

I think what makes this show super special is the relation to our home state of Michigan, and if you’re looking for a little more of what makes Michigan such a wonderful state to live in, this show is a must-see!

Take a Trip to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

By: Thomasina Guidry

Does your family love Daniel Tiger as much as mine does? Let me tell you, if we were stuck on an island and there was one television and we could only pick one children’s show to watch, we all would agree on watching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

If you aren’t familiar with Daniel Tiger, I’m going to assume that you may not have children or grandchildren. It’s a cartoon based on “Mr. Rogers,” which I didn’t know when I first watched it with my daughter. I kept feeling like the show was so familiar and I couldn’t put my finger on it. I’m ashamed to admit it took me a minute to figure it out, but I blame it on my mom memory. It’s really sad how little I remember these days.

Anyway, my youngest daughter was introduced to Daniel Tiger when she was about six years old. I’m not exactly sure how, but she talked about it all the time. I remember driving once and she was telling me all about how Daniel’s mommy was expecting a new baby. She was so excited to see that new episode. It was like how adults get when they’re waiting for the new season of “The Walking Dead.”

It’s because of her my son is now obsessed with Daniel Tiger. I can honestly say he has watched every episode on Netflix more than three times each. As well as myself and the rest of the family. And probably our babysitters. The storylines are great for kids. They always have a message on how to handle situations in a way that they can understand.

And the songs are so catchy, it’s really hard not to get invested (and not to memorize). One of our favorites is “Honk, Beep, Beep.” My son loves to dance to that one.

So, when we heard Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live! was coming to Miller Auditorium, Sunday, March 13, it was a no brainer when deciding to see the show. When I learned of it, I couldn’t wait to tell my husband about it. We weren’t going to miss taking the kids to see this show.

I can’t say we didn’t have our reservations. Our son just turned two and we thought he may be a bit young yet. However, he sits pretty well at the movies. And he loves Daniel Tiger! We think he’s going to enjoy every minute of it. And then probably throw a tantrum because it’s over. Or because he can’t get on stage to hang out with Daniel Tiger. Or because he ate all of his M&Ms. *sigh, toddlers*

But seriously, we are looking forward to seeing Daniel Tiger’s Neigborhood Live! Who doesn’t love seeing the kids’ faces light up when they see their favorite character come to life right before their little eyes?  It’s such a special moment for them and especially for us parents. It’s a great opportunity to introduce them to theatre and have them experience those feelings that they don’t have from watching a screen.

If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, you should. It’s going to be a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

What Makes Vocal Jazz Really Cool and a Sneak Peek At Gold Company

By: Clayton Dusendang

Hello all! My name is Clayton and I am a marketing assistant at Miller Auditorium. Here at Miller, the office has been buzzing about Gold Company’s upcoming performance of Anything You Can Sing, We Can Swing Better! Being a former choir member during high school, I really found a deep appreciation for vocal performance. Gold Company is made up of hard working and talented vocalists who plan throughout the year to create a fun and entertaining show for Miller Auditorium. The group has traveled the world to perform, worked with notable jazz groups including The Manhattan Transfer and Take Six and has won awards and acclaim along the way. Don’t miss your chance to catch Gold Company at Miller on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2 & 8 p.m. for “Anything You Can Sing, We Can Swing Better!” For more info. and tickets visit our site. Gold Company can sing it better than I can say it, so click here to take a listen now!
